UFC 118 - No Hooters (AIT - Fort Gordon) Day 73

Army landscaping...around the base you will see sandbags used
in all kinds of ways :)

Have I said I'm glad I'm not at Charlie lately? LOL. There are a number of soldiers there that were required to have some mandatory fun today. They have to go to some concert. I have no idea even what kind of music it was, but it was required. Hopefully its not too bad for all of them.

I left the barracks a little early this morning so I could swing by the bank on the way to the PX. I wanted to make sure I got to it before it closed since its a Saturday. My grandma sent me a cashiers check for my birthday and I wanted to cash it. So I went in the bank and asked if they could cash it. Turns out they only cash checks from their bank or for their members. So I said you’re a bank that doesn’t cash checks?. The teller explained they cant because what if it was a bad check?. I said are you kidding me? Its a cashiers check lady. Still no go, so I walked out pissed off. Not a great way to start the day.

We walked over to the PX and I asked if they could cash it...sure no problem. Strange...a bank that wont cash a check, but a store that will. Whatever I'm happy now, I have my cash. First thing to buy...a haircut! Next thing I bought was some more PT uniforms. With all these harder workouts here at RBK I’ve been going through all my PTs and I've either had to do a wash in the middle of the week, or use my "for display only" PTs. The young Hawaiian was with me and we had breakfast at a little restaurant called The Huddle House. Pretty good and inexpensive breakfasts.

I came back to the barracks and worked on my SkillPorts until I finished all of them. What a relief to get all of those out of the way. We have to have them all done by week 12 and it was starting to get a little too close for comfort. I didn’t want to be scrambling to finish them at the last minute.

I had plans to go to Hooters tonight and watch the UFC 118, but PFC Metal went to a concert and everyone else either can't go or has hall guard shifts. Right when I was wondering how I was going to watch the fights the young Hawaiian comes into my room and says he has it streaming on his laptop. In true 25 Bravo fashion he hooked his laptop up to the day room TV. So we have a big picture and sound, not too shabby. Pretty soon we had a small crowd gathered around watching the fights, including the sergeant on desk..LOL. It turned out to be pretty fun, not a big Hooters crowd and no beer...but it was still fun.

Near the end of the fights after midnight all of a sudden I hear “At Ease”. I thought someone was joking, but everyone jumped up anyway. Turns out the Command Sergeant Major came in the room in civilian clothes. That guy has no life...no life at all!

Overheard Quote: “I’m feeling a little down...I just found out my hero Neil Patrick Harris is gay” (while eating pizza with Pvt Celtic and the ex-cop. The ex-cop said this, and he was quite serious too. It was pretty funny because you could actually tell he wasn’t joking. He was taking it pretty hard too. I started laughing so hard I almost spit out my pizza)

The Ex-Cop comment had me laughing so hard I had tears! Where has he been and was he really serious?

UFC 117 (AIT - Fort Gordon) Day 52

A couple of battle buddies out with us at Hooters enjoying a drink
while watching UFC 117

Ahhh...the weekend, it’s so nice to sleep in and not have a morning formation until 8:30AM. The day was pretty laid back, did my laundry and a little SkillPorts (this is the online learning that we have to have all completed before week 12). I had my Pop Tarts for breakfast and later on in the day went to the PX with the young hawaiian for lunch at Taco Bell. Volcano Tacos are a gift from the gods. I love those things, add a little fire sauce to them and they kick butt.

The big plans for this evening were watching the UFC 117 fight Silva vs. Sonnen. PFC Metal’s wife came to town so we didn’t have to rent a taxi to get off base which was nice. We made a quick stop by the tattoo parlor to check out their shop. I think I’m going to get another tattoo, unlike a lot of the guys here I’ve been thinking about it for a long time and I have the artwork already of what I want. I chatted with the artist there and he is their shading specialist, so I’m excited about getting it done. Now I just have to schedule a good time to do it since it will take about 3 and a half hours.

Next stop...Hooters. We arrived almost three hours early so we could secure a seat for us and three other soldiers that were going to meet us there. To go with my theme of hot freakin’ food I ordered the boneless buffalo wings - level of hotness = 911! I think my entire face heated up, but they were so darn good. Add to that a few beers and it was a good night. We ran into some guys from our platoon back at basic (Lurch and Skeletor) who were there to watch the fight as well. They seem to be doing well and it was good to catch up with them.

The fight card was pretty good and watching with a big crowd is something that every UFC fan should try to do. It’s awesome to have all the cheering and jeering going on while the fighters attack each other.

We left after the second round of the main event because we had to be back in our bunks before bed check at 1AM and we were cutting it close. I thought Silva was going to kick Sonnen’s ass, but it turned out Sonnen was the one doing the ass kicking. We didn’t want to miss the fight, but it was a little more important to not get into trouble either. We jumped in the car and headed back to base cursing at every red light we had to stop at. Finally we made it back and came running in with 2 minutes and change to spare. Once we arrived the sergeant on duty informed us that Silva came back and won the fight with a submission. Wow, I wish we could have seen it. I guess I’ll watch it when the DVD comes out on Netflix.

Now I get to sleep for a bit before my weekend hall guard shift starts at 6AM. The weekend shifts don’t happen too often because they are 6 hours long. So I guess that’s the good and the bad. At least I’m getting it out of the way now so I won’t have to do another one for a while.

10 Days...Really? (Pre-Basic Training) 10 Days until Basic

Wow…looking at the countdown clock I saw that I have 10 days left before leaving! It still seems a little unreal. Sometimes I can’t believe I’m going on this crazy adventure. As the time gets shorter before I leave, my calendar seems to get fuller and fuller. Tonight we are having some friends over for our weekly UFC movie night. For a while now we have had friends come over to catch up with all the old UFC fights. We have all of them in our Netflix queue, and tonight is UFC 68. Good company, good food, good beer, throw some violence in the mix… what could be better? I will miss these nights.
Tomorrow I have my best friend coming up to finally remove his car that has been in our driveway for the last few months. My wife was getting a little worried that it was going to be here forever, one less thing to keep the house from selling. This weekend we’ll go watch my kid’s basketball tournament, then I will be heading back for my last week of work. I am going to try and get most of my stuff packed this weekend so I can get everything checked off my packing list.
Checked on zillow.com out of curiosity to see how many houses have sold in our zip code lately. The answer… 1. Really?? Only 1! The market really sucks right now. It shows that there are 319 houses for sale and only one has sold recently. We have reduced the price by $5,000 and plan on reducing it another $5,000 in a couple months. I really don’t think the price is the problem, especially after looking at the statistics for our area. The economy just really sucks right now. In fact our neighbors house is for sale as well, and I just found out it is in foreclosure. As a last resort we will have to rent the house once I get stationed somewhere. I do not have any desire to be a landlord, but perhaps it may work out for the best. If we can rent the place for a year or two, the economy may pick up. Perhaps we will be able to actually break even or (dare I think it) make some money from the sale.
